World Cup 2022

Last updated: 18th November 2022 [timing tweak]

This page is intended to cover all questions for those attending the World Cup this year, including its associated supporting side-events. Please contact us through the Contact page if you have any outstanding queries.

WHEN IS THE WORLD CUP?

The World Cup takes place on Saturday November 19 2022! Doors open at 11am. Please arrive for 11:30. The event begins at midday sharp.

WHERE WILL THE WORLD CUP BE HELD?

The World Cup will be held at Orford House, Walthamstow, East London.

WHAT FORMAT IS THE WORLD CUP?

The event is Old School Team Unified. Each team is made up of three players, each playing their own deck, a minimum of 60 cards with a sideboard of exactly 15 cards. If all players on a team theoretically combined their three decks into one, that ‘deck’ should be Old School legal. That means no more than one copy of a Restricted card between all three decks, and no more than four of any non-basic cards.

We will be using the Swedish Banned and Restricted list, and the UK printing legality policy (this basically means that proxy cards are not permitted, but any genuine old-frame reprint is legal. CE/IE cards are not allowed).

WHAT IF I DON’T HAVE A TEAM?

This is no problem at all – every year we have many solo players – we can match you up with two team-mates who are also looking to play. Previous winning teams have been put together in this way! Please drop us a note ASAP.

WHERE DO I GET A TICKET?

Please buy tickets here: https://www.eventbrite.com/e/old-school-magic-world-cup-2022-tickets-411670386207

An entry fee of £30 per player will be used to cover venue costs, unique Old School prizes, and swag giveaways to all players. All remaining funds after running expenses will be donated to our chosen charity. All entry fees are non-refundable.

The World Cup has a soft cap of 24 teams (72 players). In the event of a sell-out, we will try to accommodate additional players from the wait-list on a first-come, first-served basis.

WHICH CHARITY ARE YOU SUPPORTING?

We are proud to partner with LICK (London Inner City Kitties), an organisation that works in North-East London to care for unwanted London cats and find them loving homes, through fostering and re-homing.

Their work has become especially invaluable during the past 2.5 years, with many cats being left homeless due to the economic pressures owners face, and with many new owners benefitting from adopting a cat to bring them companionship during a difficult time of increased loneliness and anxiety. You can learn more about LICK here.

WHAT ABOUT THE DAYS AROUND THE EVENT?

You’re welcome to just participate in the World Cup, but if you want to make a weekend of it, we are laying on the following activities to all ticket-holders:

Friday: Brothers’ Highlander evening meet-up at The Collab in Walthamstow. Join us for beers and food the night before the World Cup. We encourage you to bring a Brothers’ Highlander deck (our in-house 100-card singleton format), and to compete on the night for spot prizes! (Note – in the spirit of the format, these will not solely be earned by game wins!). You may also have a chance to play Ante 40K, ALICE, or other OS variants, if that’s your thing.

Sunday: The day after the World Cup, the Brothers will be running the ‘Sunday Comedown’ – we will meet in Central London for a gentle sightseeing tour of London’s greatest sights, interspersed with stop-offs for coffee, and maybe a few games of Old School along the way.

WHAT ABOUT LOGISTICS?

Walthamstow is a north-eastern district of London, selected for its easy rail access.

Are you flying here with a choice of airports? London Stansted is the best major airport for connecting to Walthamstow. From there, you can take a 30 minute train to Tottenham Hale, which is a short Uber, or two Underground Stops, from Walthamstow Central and the venue.

Getting here from Heathrow Airport? The easiest solution is to catch the Piccadilly Line alllll the way to Finsbury Park. There, you can change across the platform to the Northbound Victoria Line. The last stop is Walthamstow Central. You are likely to want to take the right exit when you get to the top of the escalator, which will lead you out to the Travelodge. From here, you are about 6 minutes’ walk to Orford House.

Coming here from elsewhere? The Victoria Line is likely to be your best route, but travellers from elsewhere may benefit from using the London Overground. There are two Overground lines connecting to Walthamstow. One begins at Liverpool Street station, the other runs across to West London.

How do I get around? Our best advice is to download the Citymapper app for your phone, which will make your life a lot easier!

Where should I stay? The Walthamstow Travelodge is a large budget hotel, located next door to the tube and 6 minutes’ walk from the venue. We have no relationship with them, but recommend this place if you want to make a weekend of it. Other hotels are available.
